How important is dance for creating a hit music video?
The music video remains as popular today as it has ever
been, and a big part of their appeal lies in the dance routines they feature.
In fact, if you look at some of the most successful music videos of all time,
many of them feature very special or unique dance routines.
Michael Jackson spearheaded the revolution in dance-focussed
music videos, along with MTV, which millions of people across the USA and

half-horror and half-music video. It is estimated that around 4 billion people
have watched Thriller to date.
Since then, dance has played a big role in the music video,
arguably helping many music tracks to become big hits. Most recently we have
seen Gangnam Style, the Korean K-pop track from PSY become a global hit. At
time of writing more than 1.2 billion people have watched Gangnam Style on
Youtube. Add to this the number of people who have watched it on music channels
globally, and the video may soon overtake Thriller. But as well as being a catchy
song, it also comes with a unique video featuring a most unusual dance. This
odd Korean dance has capture the imaginations of people across the world.
But before Gangnam Style there were many big moments in the
world of music video dances. Britney Spears’ Hit Me baby One More Time became
an instant hit in 1998 when appeared on TV screens. The provocative dance,
filmed in a real California high school, was very well choreographed and, when
combined with such a catchy tune, was sure to succeed.
Skilled music video dancers are always in demand in order to
feed the world’s unquenchable desire for crazier music videos, such as Zarina,
a Kazakh dancer and model who has been working internationally on various dance
projects for some time. Zarina has taken part in numerous high profile state
dance performances in cities such as Almaty, Astana, Moscow, Novosibirsk –
among many others.
Zarina has impressed many with her dazzling dance ability
and her exotic Eastern looks. Her vivacious yet highly professional approach to
modern dancing could be compared to the young Madonna, who burst on to the
world stage in the 1980s. Madonna has set numerous new benchmarks in the world
of dance, but one of the most remarkable and memorable was Vogue in 1990. She
created a dance phenomenon in a black and white music video that was to become
a true pop classic. While she has made many wonderful videos, the captivating
dance moves in this video, and the fantastic art deco set, have made this one
of her very best.
More recently, UK hip hop artist MIA caused a stir with her
provocative dance moves in the video of her latest hit Bad Girls. But what were
more controversial were the characters and the background; Arab men in a Middle
Eastern-looking town, with MIA’s sensual hip hop moves in the foreground. While
some see the dance video as serving up clichés about the Middle East, other
says that MIA represents female empowerment – at least within the music
industry.
The world of dance within the music video industry is
evolving all the time, and the future is sure to hold many more exciting new
dance styles – and great songs to accompany them. As can be seen from the most
recent music video hits around the globe, dance remains one of the most
important elements in making a global music video hit.
